The potential use of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as a vector for the ingestion of xenobiotics by Caenorhabditis elegans in toxicity screening

Abstract:

We propose to use the well-known model C. elegans to evaluate the toxicity of any xenobiotic molecules, loaded into a specific nanocarrier, i.e. MOFs, in order to overcome the challenges of C. elegans poor appetence for many chemical compounds. So far, xenobiotics have been assayed at high concentrations, well above physiological conditions, resulting in non-standardized, non-conclusive, methods. This first proof of concept using MOFs as a nanocarrier for xenobiotic toxicity evaluation will allow us to obtain a standardized bioassay platform of a large number of xenobiotics that will be further developed into High-Throughput Screening (HTS) level. The markets addressed are the cosmetics industry which cannot use anymore animal testing for its new molecules, medical research and pharmaceutical industry for drug development, occupational health with the R&D on endocrine disrupters.
